Biography

Dr. Cuenca-Carlino serves as the Department of Special Education Chairperson at Illinois State University (ISU). She has taught courses on assessment, literacy, and evidence-based practices in special education to undergraduate and graduate students. Her research focuses on enhancing the literacy skills (i.e., writing, reading, and math) of students with high-incidence disabilities, special education teacher preparation programs, and culturally responsive practices for special educators, including practices for English Learners with disabilities. She has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations related to her scholarship at national and international venues. Before becoming Chair, she served for over three years as the Assistant Vice President for Faculty Development, Diversity, and Learning in the Office of the Provost at ISU. In this role, she led, expanded, and enhanced on-campus professional development programming for faculty and staff within Academic Affairs, bringing an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens.
